Since Roman times Whitstable has been famous for the oysters that are being collected in the area and nowadays there is an annual Oyster Festival in the town. An interesting fact is that the world's first steam-hauled railway services was opened on 3 May 1830 and the line went from Westgate in Canterbury to Whitstable town centre. The distance between the beginning and the end of the line was 6 miles. During recent years due to a redevelopment project certain areas in the town were significantly improved and new shops and houses have been constructed, also a town square, art gallery and community centre with a performance space. The project was completed in 2005.
